National Kidney Foundation

Supporters of the National Kidney Foundation gathered at The University Club of Washington,DC for a kick off reception to mark the 8th Annual Kidney Walk on October 3 in Georgetown. To introduce VelocityDC, a new annual event and unique collaborative effort between DC’s leading dance organizations, Hector Torres, Vice President of Capital Hotels, hosted a launch party at the Beacon Hotel on June 17.  Jeff Parks of WPAS, The Washington Ballet’s Septime Webre and Harman’s Chris Jennings were among the speakers hailing a new vision for dance in the entire DC community.  Modeled on New York’s Fall for Dance, the event will take place Oct. 2 and 3 at Sidney Harman Hall. - Mary Bird

Merage Foundation National Leadership Awards

A packed National Press Club celebrated the 2009 Merage Foundation National Leadership Awards honoring immigrant contributions to the U.S.  Honorees were pianist Emanuel Ax, New York Times diplomatic correspondent Helene Cooper, AIDS pioneer David Ho, former Governor Madeleine Kunin, and Vincent Mai, financier, social entrepreneur and human rights activist.  The event was sponsored by the Merage Foundation in association with the Woodrow Wilson International Center.  In his introductory remarks, former Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez said “in our history progress has been linked to immigrants.” Photo by David Own Hawxhurst - Mary Bird
