Virginia wines for dc dwellers

As I sit at my computer here at The Georgetowner, I can look directly into the depths of the wine section at Dean and Deluca. We have a wine issue every year, usually in October. This year we learned that October is designated as the month of Virginia Wine. We may not be experts, but with our 55th Anniversary, we decided to “cheers” The Georgetowner and celebrate our anniversary with a toast to Virginia Wines and the people making it special. .... IN COUNTRY

The Hunt cover

A friend who works for The Georgetowner asked me to define “Hunt Country”.  I have lived here for thirty years and when I was a teenager I drove to Fauquier County on the weekends to ride horses. I absolutely fell in love with the beautiful scenery and the life style. A few years later I bought a small horse farm in northern Fauquier and raised my family. The desire to be a part of this country lifestyle has affected the very fabric of my life.  I chose to be a veterinarian, a profession which allows me to live and work in Hunt Country... [more]

Chapter fourteen

Diary of a Georgetowner

Still growing and prospering, Georgetown looks forward to decade of watching with interest the activity on the other side of Rock Creek where the new capital is slowly rising. The cornerstone for the President’s House has been laid, and speculation in Federal City lots has begun. Building activity in Georgetown itself is continuing at an even greater pace. Georgetown Seminary, Visitation Convent, and three new churches will rise in the 1790s; on the other hand fifteen taverns will be in friendly.... [more]

financial stability cover

What a difference ten years makes! With the national financial crisis upon us, all we are hearing is bad news both nationally and locally. A $700 billion dollar bailout for financial institutions on the national level is needed. Maryland is facing a $450 million shortfall if they pass slots – otherwise it’s a $1 billion plus shortfall. Virginia is facing a $2-$3 billion dollar problem. And the District faces a potential $131 million dollar revenue shortfall, something I believe we can manage.... [more]

Happy 55th anniversary cover

In 1979, I wrote my first cover story for the Georgetowner. It was a feature-style take on Senator Ted Kennedy’s ill-fated, imploding run for the Democratic presidential nomination against incumbent President Jimmy Carter, among others. I wrote the story on a borrowed old electric typewriter. I delivered the story in person to The Georgetowner offices above a bakery (Crumpets) on lower Wisconsin Avenue..... [more]

In the case of Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams, it’s their status as particular kinds of American artist-icons that sometimes can get in the way of dealing with the work, which, in turn, is also just a little too familiar to us....  [more]

The word demimondaine signifies a high class courtesan, a woman of the world. Such was the fictional creation  by Alexandre Dumas, fils, first published in 1848 and almost immediately picked up by Guiseppe Verdi to become La Traviata or the fallen woman..... [more]

Pamela Peabody’s New... cover

There is something old Washington about a project like the new documentary film “Invisible: Abbott Thayer and the Art of Camouflage”.

Old and instantly familiar, and less familiar names permeate the film, the subject and the documentary. The producer and the top names associated with the project are all familiar Washington area residents, from producer Pamela Peabody, to director Carl Colby (he’s the son of the late CIA Director Richard Colby), to co-producer Denise Couture, to film editor Virginia Quesada.,... Yacht Sequoiafp

As I thought about where to initiate our new feature “Lunch with GT,” my thoughts raced along the lines of “What would be the nicest place to lunch on a beautiful Indian summer day in Washington?”  This eventually led me to the Presidential Yacht Sequoia. If I can’t have lunch with the President, (he claimed to be busy; however, from my standpoint, we will not do lunch with those whose approval ratings are less than 30%) I might as well use his boat. Actually it is no longer the President’s boat.... [more]
