The email arrived after 8 p.m. last Monday, Feb. 13. Subject line: An important announcement about STC.

"I have thought for a couple of years now though that it actually was time for the theatre and for me to move on," said Michael Kahn, artistic director since 1986 of D.C.'s Shakespeare Theatre Company, in the linked video message. Elegantly dressed in an elegant setting, the American theater legend went on to say (in his somehow both clear and raspy voice) that he would step down in July of 2019 so that his successor can present STC's 2019-2020 season "as their own."

Kahn, who will turn 80 this year, will be the featured guest at Georgetown Media Group's next Cultural Leadership Breakfast, Thursday, March 9, at the George Town Club, 1530 Wisconsin Ave. NW. At the 8 a.m. event, the 18th in the series, he will share his experiences and insights in a conversation with Georgetowner arts writer Gary Tischler.

The 2016-17 series is sponsored by Bonhams, which will offer complimentary jewelry appraisals following the program.

Admission to the March 9 breakfast is $25 ($20 for George Town Club members). To RSVP, email richard@georgetowner.com or call 202-338-4833.
