Take Your Pick of Heirloom Apples at Georgetown Farmers Market, Sept. 25

Excitement about fresh good food is palatable — oops, we mean palpable — at the Sunday Georgetown Neighborhood Farmers Market, part of Licking Creek Bend Farm, at the corner of P Street and Wisconsin Avenue NW. The market, in the parking lot of the former Marvelous Market and, before that, Neam’s, is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, until October.

On Sept. 25, the market will present a free program and tasting — starting 11 a.m. — of American heirloom apples, some brands dating back to the 1700s. The tasting will include Cox Orange, Pippins (United Kingdom), Wolf River, Paradise (France) and Smokehouse (Pennsylvania).

Last Sunday, there were lines of shoppers tasting and buying out the organic juicy cassaba “lemon” melons, the husk cherries and the fairy tale eggplants, some of the more unusual produce included among the seasonal organic farm-grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, meat and eggs, plus bread, cookies and coffee, offered by five local-area producers, organized by Esther Siegel and her husband, farmer and food activist Michael Tabor.

“At our small markets we love to share tips on cooking all our known and lesser-known products,” Siegel said. “We are famous for our loyalty. We will always be here from summer to fall and no one will leave without the produce they want, even if they can’t pay immediately.”
