Demonstrating the abundance and profoundness of Korea’s folk music and dance traditions, this show presents sinawi, an instrumental ensemble with improvisation derived from shamanistic music; pansori, a deeply moving genre combining narrative song, storytelling and body movements, accompanied by solo percussion; seungmu, solo folk dances developed from Buddhist monks; and namdogutgeori and seongjupuri, iconic folk music of Gyeongsang Province.

This museum-wide festival celebrates the return of fall, D.C.’s music scene and the Hirshhorn’s immersive new exhibition on Ragnar Kjartansson. Live outdoor music will highlight local bands whose musicians are featured in Kjartansson’s live performance piece “Woman in E.” The Hirshhorn’s biergarten will feature complimentary beer tastings from Bier Baron Tavern for attendees age 21 and over, while supplies last. There will also be a screening of Kjartansson’s “A Lot of Sorrow,” which documents a six-hour live performance by the National.

Artist and noted art historian, curator and philanthropist Dr. David Driskell talks about the Washington Color School, with a focus on Sam Gilliam and Alma Thomas. Considered the foremost authority on art of the black diaspora, Driskell is a distinguished professor emeritus of art at the University of Maryland, College Park, where the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora is located.
