Fireworks light up the national monuments on July 4

Soggy weather and security concerns did not deter the hundreds of thousands who gathered in Washington D.C. on July 4 dressed in red, white and blue as our nation celebrated its 239th birthday. A massive fireworks display and the annual PBS concert from the Capitol lawn drew additional audiences from around the country. View our photos of the fireworks over the National Mall, the National Independence Day Parade, the PBS "A Capitol Fourth" concert, and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall by clicking on the photo icons below.
