Wreath Laid at Navy Memorial in Honor of Victims of Navy Yard Shooting (photos)


Senior Department of Defense officials laid a wreath at the Lone Sailor Statue at the U.S. Navy Memorial on Sept. 17 in honor of those killed during the previous day’s shooting at the Washington Navy Yard. Participants included: Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel; Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus; Chief of Naval Operations Admiral, Jonathan Greenert; Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey; Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral James A. Winnefeld, Jr.; Vice Admiral John Totushek, USNR (Ret), president and CEO of the U.S. Navy Memorial; Mayor Vincent Gray; Metropolitan Police Commander Kimberly Chisley-Missouri. Flags will fly at half staff nationwide through Friday night, Sept. 20, in remembrance of the 12 victims. The Lone Sailor Statue stands on the broad granite plaza which forms the amphitheater of the Navy Memorial which is located on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, between 7th and 9th streets, adjacent to the Archives-Navy Memorial Metro station.
