Appreciating Your Vote

By Jack Evans

September 2008

jack wins

I want to take this opportunity to thank all the voters for your support in the election last Tuesday. As you know by now, I won the Democratic nomination for the Ward 2 City Council position with 65% of the vote, a large mandate for a 17-year incumbent in a time of youth, energy and change.

I believe it represents a validation of the policies I have pursued and those of Mayor Fenty whose positions I have supported. In particular, the approach he is taking, with my support, to school reform.

I was particularly pleased with the results in Georgetown where I received 77% of the vote. In addition, I received 58% of the vote in Foggy Bottom, showing strong support in the face of a vocal minority opposed to change. I also received 63% of the vote in Shaw, the largely African American area of the ward and my opponent’s home precinct.

Ward 2 is home to many diverse groups and many more differing opinions. What I have tried to do, successfully, is to provide leadership on issues even when it appears many residents are not in agreement. That is why so much has been accomplished and why I received the endorsement of every local publication and every organized group. But most of all, my supporters did a great job in getting out the vote. Again I thank you.

Keep in mind I still have an election on November 4. I have a Republican opponent and, as always, take every election seriously. I will be campaigning right up to Election Day, so please bear with me. Yes, my signs will be here another 60 days, as well as my mailings. I will try and avoid those annoying robo calls.

Like with the primary election, my campaign will take down everyone’s signs quickly after November 4. Thanks again and remember to vote one more time.
