Diary of a Georgetowner
In the third generation the Georgetowner is a veteran of the Revolution and a man of affairs. He still holds a comfortable amount of land, and if not the owner of a business, he has heavy investments in several commercial ventures. Tobacco is still king, although Georgetown, now raised to the status of city, has diversified her trade to insure her continued economic growth. All seems well on the Potomac. June 17, 1789. Robert Peter has purchased a tract of land on the far side of Rock Creek and will soon begin building there. He calls this new property "Mexico." Time to Vote
Don’t forget - It’s primary election time. On Tuesday, September 9, the District will hold its primary election. This is the off year primary, which means the seats for Mayor and DC Council Chair are not on the ballot. Thus there are party primaries for the two At-Large seats and for the Ward 2, 4, 7 and 8 Councilmembers. There are also elections for the local Democratic and Republican party committees.
Because of the limited ballot and, because everyone is focused on the November Presidential election, the turnout in this election is usually low. Therefore, it is important that I take the time to continue to remind the devoted readers of this publication to VOTE... [more]

Last week, the DC public schools opened for business. School Chancellor Michelle Rhee has worked overtime “fixing” our school system – closing schools, repairing schools, getting textbooks to schools, reworking teachers’ tenure and paychecks. The time has come for results, and this year will prove critical to Mayor Fenty and Michelle Rhee in revamping the tired old school system.
