2008 Fall visual arts Preview

Photo: By Tom Wolff of Paul Roth

Photography, always a prominent presence at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, has become a really big deal there. Last year, it was the back-to-back dynamic duo of Ansel Adams and Annie Leibovitz exhibitions.

Come September, Richard Avedon, who passed away in 2004, proves that he is nothing if not very much alive with the big block-buster exhibition “Richard Avedon: Portraits of Power”, which opens to the public September 13... [more]

Stay Fit While Pregnant cover

For awhile doctors cautioned women not to gain more than 24 pounds during pregnancy. This may sound “sound”, but this was related to the concerns about low-birth-weight babies and nutritional deficiencies in mothers. In the 1990’s, the Institute of Medicine established gestational weight gain guidelines based on pre-pregnancy body mass indexes (BMI): 28-40 pounds for underweight women, 25-35 pounds for normal weight women, and 15-25 pounds for overweight and obese women.... IN COUNTRY

Warrenton, VA cover

If you’ve ever been to Fauquier County, VA, then you probably understand why locals refer to the region as “The heart of Virginia horse and wine country.” This simple adage opens the door into the heart of the people and their passions, but does not go far enough to explain everything this beautiful area has to offer. On the next 2 pages, we are going to attempt to inspire your next trip to Warrenton, VA by highlighting a few of the locals’ favorite spots and pastimes... [more]

Chapter twelve

Diary of a Georgetowner

In the third generation the Georgetowner is a veteran of the Revolution and a man of affairs. He still holds a comfortable amount of land, and if not the owner of a business, he has heavy investments in several commercial ventures. Tobacco is still king, although Georgetown, now raised to the status of city, has diversified her trade to insure her continued economic growth. All seems well on the Potomac. June 17, 1789. Robert Peter has purchased a tract of land on the far side of Rock Creek and will soon begin building there. He calls this new property "Mexico." It is expected that he will accept the office of mayor of the city of Georgetown, and surely no one will oppose the nomination.... [more]

Time to Vote cover

Don’t forget - It’s primary election time.  On Tuesday, September 9, the District will hold its primary election. This is the off year primary, which means the seats for Mayor and DC Council Chair are not on the ballot.  Thus there are party primaries for the two At-Large seats and for the Ward 2, 4, 7 and 8 Councilmembers. There are also elections for the local Democratic and Republican party committees.

Because of the limited ballot and, because everyone is focused on the November Presidential election, the turnout in this election is usually low. Therefore, it is important that I take the time to continue to remind the devoted readers of this publication to VOTE... [more]

The village

in the Morning, off to School cover

Last week, the DC public schools opened for business. School Chancellor Michelle Rhee has worked overtime “fixing” our school system – closing schools, repairing schools, getting textbooks to schools, reworking teachers’ tenure and paychecks. The time has come for results, and this year will prove critical to Mayor Fenty and Michelle Rhee in revamping the tired old school system.

Here in Georgetown, the Anthony Hyde Elementary school,... [more]

A Mammoth Review

fp

Amid an eye-popping two-house, Caligari-like set, Playwright Jason Grote’s “Maria/Stuart” kicks off with a kid on a phone in the kitchen, talking to his cousin. A graphic novel artist and writer, he’s describing his newest creation, featuring a super-hero named “American Male”, battling cold-war Russian nemeses named after plays by Chekhov....  [more]

Liquid nourishment fp

While it is common knowledge that France is internationally famous for its outstanding wines, I set out learn more about French cocktails. I start my quest during a delicious Sunday dinner on the outdoor patio at La Fourchette, a classical French restaurant in Adams Morgan. Pierre and Jackie Chauvet, who both hail from the ritzy Mediterranean city of Cannes, own the quaint bistro. The couple first moved to Washington in the 1970’s. Pierre’s first job in the U.S. was as a chef at the Dutch Embassy... [more]
