Diary of a Georgetowner
In the third generation the Georgetowner is a veteran of the Revolution and a man of affairs. He still holds a comfortable amount of land, and if not the owner of a business, he has heavy investments in several commercial ventures. Tobacco is still king, although Georgetown, now raised to the status of city, has diversified her trade to insure her continued economic growth. All seems well on the Potomac. June 17, 1789. Robert Peter has purchased a tract of land on the far side of Rock Creek and will soon begin building there. He calls this new property "Mexico." It is expected that he will accept the office of mayor of the city of Georgetown, and surely no one will oppose the nomination.... [more]

Beat the Heat!
As we go to print this week I have some good news to report – you can go beat the heat (although last week was not bad at all...I kept thinking it was May!) the last two weekends of the summer. I just received word from DC Parks and Recreation that the Volta Park pool will stay open the weekend of the 22nd – 24th and Labor Day weekend of the 29th – 1st. Normally we scale back pool hours sharply the last weeks of August.... [more]
