As we near the end of August and the dog days drag along, what better way is there to wind down from your hectic summer than to take a short drive outside the city and witness the majesty of the countryside while enjoying delectable wines from the Northern Virginia region. We have done some research for you and below is a sampling of what we consider the best options for Virginia wineries and special events through Labor Day weekend.

8/23/08 Summer Sunsets at Old House Vineyards 6-9 pm.

What could be more relaxing than watching the sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains while sipping on wine and enjoying live music? Don’t forget your blanket and wine-friendly snacks!

8/23/08 and 8/30/08 Sounds of Summer Concert Series at Tarara Winery 6:30-9:30 pm. Gates open at 5pm

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the gate, but children 6 and under are FREE. You are sure to fall in love with the wine as you listen to live music under the cover of stars at Shadow Lake.

8/23/08 Annual Blessing of the Harvest at Three Fox Vineyards 3:30 pm

8/29/08-9/1/08 “Endless Summer Party!” at Barrel Oak Winery 11am-6pm

No tickets are required, but there are fees for additional special tastings and tours.

8/30/08 – 9/1/08 Labor Day Celebration at Fox Meadow Winery 11am-5pm

No advanced tickets are required, but the cost is $5 for a tasting.

Relax and enjoy the views of the sunset while Robbie Limon sings and plays his guitar.

8/30/08 Last Days of Summer Jazz at Lake Anna Winery 6-10 pm

Tickets are $30 and include live music, wine glass, tours and tasting. Reservations are required for the savory collection of gourmet cuisine.

August 23 and 24, 2008

The 2008 Thai Festival will be held at the Royal Thai Embassy to celebrate 175 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and the U.S. Dance, kickboxing and other Thai cultural performances will be going all day and food will be available for purchase, though the event itself is free. Local Thai chefs will also be competing for the title of the area’s Best Pad Thai Noodles!  Admission is free to the festival and it runs on both Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
