July 31 Penn Quarter Breakfast Meeting (8:15 am) at the National Museum of Crime & Punishment (575 7th Street, NW)

Between 8:15 and 8:40, the museum will serve a continental breakfast. Announcements will begin at 8:40 followed by five minute presentations from each of the six invited candidates of the DC Council.  The candidates will take questions after all of them have had the opportunity to speak.

Two of the candidates (Councilman Jack Evans and Mt. Vernon Square Neighborhood Association President Cary Silverman) are vying for the Democratic nomination for the Ward 2 Council seat. The four remaining candidates are running for two At Large Council seats. Two of the candidates are incumbents: Democrat Kwame Brown and Republican Carol Schwartz. Patrick Mara is challenging Carol Schwartz in the Republican primary.  The winner of this primary faces Kwame Brown and several challengers running as independents including invited candidate, Michael Brown in the general election.

Please RSVP via email to joann@PennQuarter.org. When responding, please include the first and last names and affiliations of all people attending to make it easier for Jo-Ann to create an attendance list.

August 2-7 Art of Living Foundation’s iLead2008: Be the change at Art of Living Foundation’s headquarters 2401 15th St., NW

The Art of Living Foundation’s latest initiative, “iLead2008: Be the change” is a unique campaign inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of ‘Be the Change you want to see’, and aims to raise youth awareness about individual stress and non violence.

“iLead2008: Be the change” will be launched at 6 pm on July 26 at the Foundation’s national headquarters at 2401 15 Street NW and will feature young local artists, including Christylze Bacon, DJ Soyo, fuzZAY, and a women’s empowerment drum circle. During the event, the Foundation will also recognize DC community’s youth leaders who are actively committed to non-violence. Admission is free.

The main feature of the iLead2008 campaign is the YES! Plus program, which will be offered to young adults in the DC region from August 2 –7 at the headquarters.

“The YES! Plus program is a complete life-skills training program,” said Radhika Prabhu, a YES! Plus instructor and Georgetown graduate student.  “No matter what the environment, all young people just want to make the most of their lives, have successful careers, make a difference to the world, and be happy. And the program helps you do just that.”
