SCRAPBOOK

a look into the past & an old box of photos

By David Roffman

July 2008

filomena's

We have, after 54 years in business, begun a scrapbook collection for your perusal. Every two weeks, we will post entries and rare photographs seldom seen for your nostalgic pleasure. Little things that just come to mind; old photographs that for some reason have been put away in my special box beneath my desk...people, places, things I remember. Things like:

Monday, Jan. 31, 1994: The day President Clinton came to Filomena Ristorante in Georgetown to lunch with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Joanna Chiacchieri, owner of the restaurant is at the center, others are unidentified. The two men went to lunch at the restaurant after a meeting in the Oval office of the White House. President Clinton’s suit was bought and tailored at Britches of Georgetown.

jazz

Considered one of the greatest legends in jazz, Dizzy Gillespie, best known for ushering in the 1950s “Bebop” era, said definitively of Blues Alley in Georgetown: “This is a jazz room.” Dizzy is shown playing the bongos at Blues Alley in the 1980s.

kennedy

The Kennedy mystique still draws flocks of people to gaze at the former president's home in Georgetown. For those who need a bit more, this photo from our favorite box of photos here at The Georgetowner is just perfect. Jacqueline and John with Caroline at their N Street home in 1958.
