Georgetown Business Association

the georgetowner

July 2008

coming together

As the new President of the Georgetown Business Association, Tom Bryan sent a letter out titled “Today, Tomorrow and the Future”. Below are some excerpts of what the new leader is looking to improve during his tenure.

There is only one Georgetown and it is recognized around the world.

As an organization I believe there are both short term and long term goals we should be addressing. We will continue to work with our elected officials to have common sense legislation that improves opportunities for each business owner. As an organization I believe it is our duty to try to develop programs that produce greater revenue for our local businesses or there will be no Georgetown. For too long the business community and the citizens of Georgetown have had different philosophies. It is my belief that we are one community and we need to work together to improve the viability of Georgetown for everyone. We need to reduce duplication of efforts.

As a community we need to work together to support programs and services.

The GBA will continue its legislative work, special events and public safety.

In addition to our normal work I would also like to work with other organizations and do a survey of Georgetown – online. I would like to hear from our community about the businesses we have and those the residents would like to see. I also would like to work with the Business School at Georgetown and see if we can research a few things.

In terms of marketing we need to create more traffic for our local businesses. We need to start right here with our local residents.  Instead of each individual business spending marketing money on their own, I would like to create a web portal that anyone could go to 24/7. There needs to be a reason for residents to use such a web site.  Within the next month I will meet with various business groups to show you this concept. We do not need a data dump of information but a way to connect consumers with the resources they need.

I also believe strongly in giving back to our community. I would like to ask the residents in our survey and then decide as a community – (business and residents) which charities we will support. In return we might select three deserving local charities for a one or two year period. Then throughout the year we could raise funds to support our community. We need to live, work and buy Georgetown. How many of our local residents are eating out regularly in our restaurants? How many are using all of our local businesses for their shopping needs. Providing excellent service and quality products is the key to our success.

For the next twelve months let us concentrate on developing programs that will deliver these things to our own residents.
