COOKING

Quality, Tradition, Seafood cover

Chapter NINE

Diary of a Georgetowner

March 19, 1791. Major Pierre L’Enfant (whom some of our journals persist in naming “Longfont”) has arrived in Georgetown to survey the lands continuous to Georgetown for the Federal City. He is a tall, erect man of military bearing and courtly manner. When I saw him he was completely enveloped in a long overcoat and a bell-crowned hat. He came to this country originally to volunteer his services in the war and became an officer of engineers. He has been employed as an architect in New York since the war... [more]

I always look forward to being here in the city and participating in the various celebrations. The day usually begins with the annual Palisades Parade, which takes place on MacArthur Boulevard. All the politicians, neighborhood groups and others come out to participate in what is a family parade. My family, including our golden retriever Kelly, was out in force, throwing candy and seeing friends. Afterward, hot dogs and drinks were available for all..... [more]

fp

Georgetown University linguistics professor Deborah Tannen is discussing our argument culture and expectations of women.

In the wooded McLean residence where she lives with her husband, Tannen gestures animatedly and laughs. Golds and rusts glow from her shirt, blending with the southwestern color palette of her home. As she talks, her short sandy hair and glittery earrings bob - wait, rewind!?....  [more]
