Cover Story

Fantasy Gardens - Oehme Van Sweden - Landscape Architects

Georgetown is Washington’s oldest and most venerable neighborhood, its historic homes lovingly preserved by power-brokers of every stripe. Yet, modern garden history was made along these genteel streets.  It began in 1970, when James van Sweden asked his friend Wolfgang Oehme to help him plant a garden in the tiny space behind his row house here.

The New American Garden style, which celebrates tall grasses and native perennials planted in meadow-like swaths of color, texture, and movement, was born, and eventually, spread from this tiny Georgetown yard to the entire country... [more]

Getting more out of your flip flops! cover

I found the Fitflops to be incredibly comfortable. Unlike most flip-flops that require you to scrunch your toes into claws to stop the things from flying off, the FitFlop held my foot in snugly. With every step I took, the “wobblie” middle forced my muscles to work harder with no real effort from me!.... [more]

Chapter eight

Diary of a Georgetowner

In the third generation the Georgetowner is a veteran of the Revolution and a man of affairs. He still holds a comfortable amount of land, and if not the owner of a business, he has heavy investments in several commercial ventures. Tobacco is still king, although Georgetown, now raised to thes tatus of city, has diversified her trade to insure her continued economic growth. All seems well on the Potomac.... [more]

Annual 4th of July Calendar cover

“Taxation without representation!” That was the battle cry of the 13 colonies in America that were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III with no representation in Parliament. How very appropriate that we celebrate the Fourth of July here in the Nation’s Capital, the one city in America where we have no self government, no representation to speak of .... Sorry Eleanor Holmes Norton. Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870, and in 1938 Congress reaffirmed it as a holiday.... [more]

Confessions of Crazy Cooter

fp

With Ben Jones, what you read is what you get.

Jones put a lot of stuff in the title of his book “Redneck Boy in the Promised Land” subtitled The Confessions of ‘Crazy Cooter’. The title sounds like a summing up, sort of, but really, it’s just the beginning. It’s the language and the telling in the book that tells the story, or at least gets you the essence, the core of the guy.  The language in the book is straight-forward, plain-spoken; it often has the feel of somebody speaking his mind at a gathering where speaking your mind is like a rude bodily noise....  [more]

Still “Waiting for Godot fp

“Waiting for Godot” is a play about two tramps waiting every day for someone named Godot. He never comes. But of course, he always returns. Or rather, the play is never far from the back of a director’s mind somewhere, a fluttering memory of a theater-goer and the thick lore of the theater itself and as a kind of underground popular culture reference....
